Warwick
Castle
The finest medieval castle in Britain.
The
home of the de Newburghs, de Beauchamps, Plantagenets,
Richard Neville, the 'Kingmaker', the Dudleys and the
Grevilles, Warwick Castle has rightly been described
as the finest Medieval castle in England. Approached
through a soaring gatehouse, Warwick Castle contains
state apartments with splendid ceilings and wainscoting,
together with paintings, tapestries and furniture from
down the ages.
In addition to it's impressive armoury, the private
apartments come to life with the inclusion of life-like
wax figures, elegantly costumed, which recreate a Royal
weekend party in 1898 when Frances, Countess of Warwick,
entertained the future King Edward VII.
In the grounds are Robert Marnock's Italian Garden while
the general setting is one of the triumphs of 'Capability'
Brown. The Castle, whose original mound was ordained
by William the Conqueror, is owned by Madame Tussauds
group and is open throughout the year with the exception
of Christmas Day. The past is truly brought to life
here.
